Start Wars fans can now rejoice since Motorola has just announced the limited edition Droid R2-D2 Andrid smartphone, that takes a pretty much ordinary Droid 2 handset and turns it into a device fitting any Star Wars geek wet dreams.

But what do you get apart from one of the best Android smartphones available right now if you go the R2-D2 route?

Well, the new paint scheme that resembles R2-D2 is obvious enough so I will go past that, this headset coming in a box that is made of resemble carbonite while also packing a Star Wars media dock and wired stereo headset, together with some exclusive pre-loaded content.

This mean the Star Wars geek in you will also get R2-D2 notification sounds and ringtones, four live wallpapers ((Blast the Probe Droid, Luke Balancing Yoda, Navigating the Asteroid Field and Watch Bespin’s Cloud City), the R2-D2 clock widget and an exclusive binoculars app, a lot of custom content if you ask me.

Also, in order to celebrate 30 years since the Empire Strikes Back hit theaters there is a special app, available only to Verizon Wireless customers, that allows Jedi Masters to browse, preview and download Star Wars content related to Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back.

The handsets specs, however, remained unchanged compared to the standard Droid 2, featuring the same QWERTY keyboard, Android 2.2 operating system and 3.7-inch display as before.

If all of these has aroused the Star Wars geek in you, then you should know the DROID R2-D2 by Motorola will be available at Verizon Wireless for $249 after a $100 mail-in rebate with a new two-year customer agreement.

Unfortunately for Star Wars fans around the world, it is slightly likely that Motorola will make this available outside the US, so no R2-D2 edition for you.
